The social skill of meal-praising

March 10th, 2010 by bethnorris

Source: Sydney Morning Herald (Original Article)

Here’s Dave and Katie eating dinner round at our place: ”Chompppp chommppp … yeah, so we had a lovely holiday up the coast … schhhmmack schhhmmack … there’s world-class beaches all around there … gobbbbble gobbbble … we had such a relaxing time!” and on and on they went, chomp-chatting away about their holiday - and I’m very fond of Dave and Katie, I really am, but something was wrong with their chomp-chatting conversation, and it wasn’t their incorrectly grammatical ”there’s world-class beaches” when they should’ve used the subject-verb plural form ”there ARE”. Something wronger: can’t work it out? Read on …

Here’s us eating lunch round at Dave and Katie’s place a month or so before: ”Chommmp chommmp … the chicken is deeeeelicious, just done with breadcrumbs? My fave! … schhhmmack schhhmmack … oh man, the salad! What did you do to the lettuce? Just rinsed it in tap water? Well, lettuce sing praise to this lettuce! … gobbbbble gobbbble … everything tastes just perfect, thankyooo!” and on and on my beloved and I went, complimenting every element of the meal including the desert (”Homebrand Neapolitan scooped out with a spoon! How totally Poh!”) and the paper napkins (”Just folded in half? You must’ve done a course! Teach me how!”)

So can you spot any chomp-chatting differences between the two scenarios? If you can’t find at least 50, you’re exactly like Dave and Katie, the kind of people who’ve never been taught the fundamental social skill of meal-praising, or what I call

It’s-Deliciousness.

As a student of the Old School of Guesting, I believe that whenever a host serves you food, it’s a gift from them to you, no matter what its flavour, size, texture, or if it’s just something they scraped from the roof of the microwave and smooshed on to a stale Sakata. You should express enthusiasm for the food-gift, you should go completely compliMENTAL over it. cheap flights Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Karratha But people don’t practise It’s-Deliciousness any more, …continue reading

Juggernaut effect: Apple Valley, Simley roll to wrestling titles

March 6th, 2010 by bethnorris

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune (Original Article)

On a day of celebration and domination, the happiest kid at the state wrestling tournament might have been someone who finished his high school career with a loss.
Nate Bruner, an Apple Valley senior, not only lost to Bloomington Kennedy/Jefferson’s Dylan Ness in the Class 3A title match at 145 pounds Saturday, he got pinned. In the first period.
So here was Nate, exiting the arena and hearing cheers from the Apple Valley crowd. He looked up with the widest grin in town and flashed two fingers on each hand.
That’s the kind of day it was for the Eagles. They had nine wrestlers reach the finals, and seven of them had gold medals hung around their necks. The other runner-up was junior Jake Waste, who lost to defending champion Zac Coates of Henry Sibley at 171.
In Class 2A, Simley had seven kids reach the championship round, and three Warriors won gold. Simley coach Will Short explained what goes into that kind of domination. "We’ve really had a great group of kids," he said. "When you’re talking about individuals, you’re talking about the amount of energy and work and time kids have to put in to win a state championship, and every one of our kids has done it. And there are other kids here … who have done it, too."
Apple Valley and Simley, both top-ranked, also rolled to team championships Saturday night. Neither was a surprise, but both teams certainly got the day off to a good start in the afternoon session.
Apple Valley was especially strong — seven state champs is a state record. Dakota Trom won at 119 pounds, adding to a title last year; at 125, Matt Kelliher was a repeat champion; Daniel Woiwor won at 130; Brandon Kingsley got his second title at 135, Devin Scott was the champ at 140; Destin McCauley got his fourth state title at 152, and Steven Keogh was the winner at 160.
The champions for Simley were coach’s kid Jake Short at 130, Tommy Glenn at 135 and Kurtis Julson at cheap domestic flights from Lord Howe Island to Sydney 160.

Rubbish TV That You Loved As A Teen Sabrina The Teenage Witch

Rubbish TV That You Loved As A Teen : Sabrina The Teenage Witch
Today 16:00

Over lunch the other day the staff in the FemaleFirst office got chatting about the TV shows we use to love as a kid, I mean everything from the High School likes of the kids in Sweet Valley High and Saved By The Bell, to the super power stories of Sabrina The Teenage Witch, The Secret Life Of Alex Mac and Bernard’s Watch.

It got me thinking about all the programmes I used to love watching on CITV and CBBC when I was younger, and I’ve decided to take a break from music to give you a quick reminder, and see if you loved the shows too, coming up over the next few days are a reminder of the shows we all used to love.

This show starred teen star Melissa Joan Hart as Sabrina Spellman, a teenage girl, who, on here sixteenth birthday, discovers she is a witch, and I’ve got to admit, when I was a teen I used to point my finger at things and hope magic would come out, yes, yes I know. Comment on this Article
Obviously being a novice witch meant her spells often go awry and her aunties Hilda and Zelda Spellman are left to counsel her on the proper use of her magic and give her moral advice.

They pair also take car of Salem Saberhagen, a warlock who had been turned into a cat for trying to take over the world who often adds a fantastic humour to the show, but regardless of the cat, the most memorable episode of Sabrina in my opinion was the one which featured the now classic song, “shake your wammy-fammy funky song, funky song!”

Keep your eyes peeled for another show at the same time tomorrow, and an update on what happened to our favourite characters will be coming soon!

Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before

February 18th, 2010 by bethnorris

Source: Sydney Morning Herald (Original Article)

For a hard-working comedian, hearing someone else ripping off your material is no laughing matter - and the internet doesn’t help, writes Anthony Ackroyd.

Nothing causes more animosity in comedy circles than joke stealing, but it is a crime that is notoriously difficult to prove. Unlike music, where it is easy to demonstrate a specific set of notes in one song duplicate those in another - as the Federal Court found with Men At Work’s Down Under and those two contentious bars of a flute riff - comedy is more nuanced.

It is constructed from ideas, not notation, and you cannot copyright an idea, only the unique expression of that idea. And therein lies the rub: the ways in which that same idea can be expressed are virtually infinite.

After my first open mike spot in 1982, I received a phone call from an irate comic who informed me that the phrase "it’s a personal thing" was his and that I must not use it. I was later told my accuser was the biggest joke thief on the circuit. It was my introduction to the heated debate over what constitutes plagiarism in comedy.

Within five years of telling my first joke in a comedy room, two comedians, one in Perth, the other in New Zealand, had started using huge chunks of my material. Both were eventually busted by comics who knew my act. One of them sent me a letter of apology.

Some years later I was accused of plagiarism by a histrionic American comedienne who insisted my gag about a sea slug was too similar to hers about a worm. At a highly charged meeting she brought along a copyright lawyer and I brought along a tape of another comedian doing some of ”her” material long before she started performing comedy.

The truth is that much perceived plagiarism in comedy can be explained by coincidence, or perhaps more accurately by the synchronicity of creative minds seizing upon funny ideas.

I once witnessed, within the space flights from Hobart to Mildura of a month, three comedians in different …continue reading

Pat Metheny Orchestrion

February 14th, 2010 by bethnorris

Source: Financial Times (Original Article)

Pat Metheny is a superb guitar technician, able to play whatever takes his fancy. At best, his flowing lines have an acerbic edge that complements the likes of Ornette Coleman and Kenny Garrett. But the Metheny persona has a downside, and his clean technique and tonal purity hug the middle of the road. The split personality was magnified considerably by tonight’s UK premiere of Orchestrion, an extraordinary, stage-filling, high-tech development of the player piano that gives the guitarist fingertip control of a full acoustic percussion choir by combining robotics with digital sampling.

Metheny opened with a vintage reading of the country turns, picks and vigorous strumming of “Make Peace”, the only hint of gadgetry a muffle-toned, two-to-the-bar bass line. Next, the impressionist “Sound of Water” showed that Metheny is no novice when it comes to gadgetry. His dazzling dialogue between rippling sitar and electric guitar came from a single instrument, the 42 string Pikasso guitar. “Unity Village” then showed off his impressive jazz chops, and avatar the last air bender dvd added the first signs of Orchestrion life, two remote-controlled cymbals.

Put a crown on it: Beyonce is queen of the Grammys

February 1st, 2010 by bethnorris

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune (Original Article)

Put a crown on it. Beyoncé became the queen of the Grammys on Sunday, setting a record for most trophies won by a woman in one night — six.
But the Cinderella moment belonged to 2009’s bestseller, Taylor Swift, who captured the album-of-the-year trophy for "Fearless."
"My dad and my little brother are losing their minds in our living room right now," said Swift, 20, who won three other awards. She dedicated the win to her parents. "This is a story we’ll be telling when we’re 80 years old, and we’re telling the same story to our grandkids, and they’re so annoyed with us. "
Music’s biggest night — as the Grammys likes to call itself — was ladies night. That was the message from the get-go. In the first hour, we saw striking performances by Lady Gaga (a double winner), Beyoncé and Pink, a giddy acceptance speech from Swift and a dark turn by Fergie with the Black Eyed Peas.
Beyoncé was honored for song of the year — the empowering anthem "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" — along with best female pop vocal performance ("Halo") plus four prizes in the R&B field.
"This has been such an amazing night," she said while accepting her final trophy. Before Sunday, Beyonce had captured seven Grammys in her solo career and three with her former group, Destiny’s Child.
The year’s only prominent lady of music missing Sunday was Susan Boyle, whose album came too late in 2009 to be eligible for the 52nd annual awards. She defied the Grammy youth movement, as TV comic Stephen Colbert commented near the start of the show: "Your industry was saved by a 48-year-old Scottish cat lady in sensible shoes."
Girls in the machine
There were no sensible shoes — or performances — by these young women. This wasn’t about vocal talent. It was about who could out-spectacle whom.
